How will I make a difference?
By volunteering at the dog and cat care centre, you will make a major contribution to the welfare of the animals in Thailand. Volunteers join the local team to help to make a positive difference to the lives of these animals whilst gaining new skills and knowledge.
What will I be doing?
Volunteers work 6 days each week. Each day will vary but you will get the opportunity to get involved in a range of work including walking the dogs, assisting with dog catching, giving medication and assisting with animal treatment, the daily running and maintenance of the centres, cleaning, feeding and washing animals and education programmes. You can spend your spare time just getting to know and playing with the dogs and cats! The centre runs not-for-profit vet clinic on the island where volunteer may assist and gain experience. The centre would love to have trained vets to join the team.
Many people are aware of the problems of stray dog and poor veterinary treatment of animals in Thailand, but few get to make a difference; this project provides you with this opportunity. There are usually 6 to 12 other volunteers.
More about the project
The project was established in 2005 during the construction boom after the Tsunami. During the boom, construction workers came with their dogs but left them behind when the buildings were completed. In addition to this problem, the number of tourists feeding these dogs increased which resulted in their high survival and reproduction rates causing over population.
The project has the following objectives:
Location and free time
Koh Lanta is a popular tourist destination near Phuket, the island is known for its long, sandy beaches and scuba diving. The island has mangroves, coral rimmed beaches and rugged tree covered hills. It also boasts 9 sandy beaches to enjoy and has a natural, relaxed and laid back feel to it. There are plenty destinations on the tropical island for volunteers to explore on their days off including a national park, historic Chinese fishing village, mangroves, beaches and caves!
There is a good social scene with many bars and restaurants on the island. Nightlife varies from relaxed bars on the beach to occasional dance parties and live reggae music concerts. After the project volunteers can explore the Phi Phi Islands, Krabi and the Phuket region.
Volunteer accommodation
Basic shared accommodation is provided. Each room is shared between 2 same sex volunteers (couples can have their own room). There are cold water showers, a fan and electricity points. There are many local restaurants, bars and the beaches on Koh Lanta. There is free Wi-Fi available.
If volunteers prefer, it is also possible to stay at a resort (at your own cost) and travel into work each day. We suggest volunteers spend the first few days at the accommodation provided by the project then they can choose alternative accommodation once they arrive.

The project has the following objectives:
- Prevent and control the overpopulation of dogs and cats on Koh Lanta in a humane way through sterlization programmes. By doing this, the suffering through hunger, disease, abuse and injuries will be greatly reduced
- Provide animal care for those who are injured and abused
- Provide education and promote awareness of animal care & respect
