Projects
We volunteer at over 20 different projects in Sri Lanka. To allow for a diverse work experience, all volunteers will work at a minimum of 4 projects during their time with SL Volunteers.

What is included in the placement expenses?
We work hard to keep our costs as low as possible to make the experience of volunteering as accessible as possible to people from all backgrounds.

How do SL Volunteers keep prices low?
- SL Volunteers limit money spent on advertising – over 50% of all volunteers hear about us through word of mouth
- All UK assistant coordinators are volunteers
- By staying with local families
- Providing locally sourced food for volunteers
- SL Volunteers receive support from other organisations, for example the NYSC in Sri Lanka, to provide training and facilities
- But SL Volunteers do employ people from Sri Lanka to support volunteers, because, although affordability is important to us, we believe it is essential to provide top-quality support to all our volunteers
How do SL Volunteers expenses for 8 weeks compare to other organisations?
How much spending money do volunteers need?
We always advise our volunteers to ‘live like a local’ by using public transport and eating local food. This is not only much cheaper than using taxis and eating at tourist hotels, it also enhances volunteers’ experience of the real communities they are in and, importantly, it puts money into the local economies rather than into the big hotels and tour operators. The SL Volunteers official ID will give volunteers discounts around the country.
Spending money during the week: £5 – £10This will cover daily: Lunch or rice and curry, 50p – £1. Bus ride to projects. 8p each way. 1.5L water,70p.
Spending money at weekends: £15 – £25This will cover: Beach guesthouse, for 2 sharing: approx £5 each per night. Western meal at a restaurant: £2. (You can find cheaper or much more expensive food if you wish!) The A/C Highway Bus from the SL Volunteers base to the beach: £2.
Why pay to volunteer abroad?
The way we see it you’re not actually paying to volunteer as the money goes towards paying for food, accommodation, around the clock support from our Sri Lankan team and the training and support we provide, as well as the chance to share the experience with a group of volunteers.
