Youth Teaching
SL Volunteers run free spoken English lessons for unemployed youths aged 18-25. Volunteers teach English as a foriegn language (TEFL) in pairs or groups of three to classes of around 25 youths. As our goal is to improve the students’ spoken English our volunteers often resort to unconventional means to get the students talking. Whether they involve producing short plays, playing word games, conducting practice job interviews or loudly explaining young Sri Lankan culture to volunteers, Youth Teaching classes are rarely dull!
Training: TEFL Workshop
The workshops show volunteers how to plan fun and interactive spoken english lessons. Volunteers are also given the SL Volunteers syllabus with example lesson plans, possible topics and general teaching advice to follow. Volunteers will have access to past volunteers’ lesson plans but will be encouraged to create their own. Volunteers teach in pairs or in groups of three. The TEFL Workshop is run by SL Volunteers coordinators.
