How will I make a difference?
Volunteers will join the team in Nepal organising activities with the orphans, street children and school pupils in the Himalayan city of Pokhara. This special two week cultural placement allows volunteers to join a group working at a range of community projects and gain first-hand experience of the charity work in Nepal.
You can contribute by volunteering at a range of fantastic placements which include:
You can help make a difference to the children since you can show them that people do care and you can bring a little more love and fun into their lives. The interaction with foreign volunteers will naturally improve the children’s English but will also improve the children’s confidence.
What will I be doing?
You will live and work with a team of volunteers from around the world on the two week structured project which is run by Chrissy, our PoD member of staff who is based in Nepal. Working with a team of other volunteers and PoD staff, your role will be to run activities at orphanages, street children’s centres and schools in the beautiful city of Pokhara. Volunteers will take part in a range of team activities including a sports day at a rural school, English language games in a slum school and arts and crafts sessions at the street children’s centre. Volunteers will receive a Nepali language lesson in their first week in Nepal.
More about the project
We have been working with the child care centres in Nepal since 2007 and we support them through volunteers as well as financial support through the PoD Charity.
We have two members of staff who are based in Pokhara. Chrissy is our volunteer manager; she is the first point of call for volunteers and she will be there to support you throughout your time at the project. Phil is our local Nepali placement manager and he will introduce you to your placement. The team support your work through regular team meetings and by being available for informal one to one support when needed.
The Street Children's Centre rescues children from a life on the street. The orphanage is home to around 15 orphaned and disadvantaged children between 2 and 15 years old. The Asha foundation orphanage uses its limited resources to provide the children with accommodation, food, education and support. The child care centres allow low to middle income families to work while their children are at a day care centre in a safe and secure environment. The nurseries are located in local community schools. The slum school is a NGO which offers education to the disadvantaged children who live in and around the slum in Nepal.
Location and free time
This is a structured 2 week project so free time is mainly in the evenings and on the weekend. Volunteers live in the area of Lakeside which is in close proximity to restaurants, internet cafes and shops. This project location is ideal for those wanting to relax and admire the surrounding mountains and is also perfect for anyone wanting to explore the Himalayas after their time volunteering. The surrounding region is defined by the dramatic snow-capped peaks of the Annapurna Mountain Range which overlook the city. Volunteers will have a free weekend to explore Pokhara and take advantage of its fantastic base location to access many adventure activities including paragliding, white-water rafting, kayaking and trekking.
Volunteer accommodation
Volunteers live in a family run guesthouse owned by a lovely lady called Bindu. It is located in Lakeside, the part of Pokhara where most travellers stay. Volunteers will share a twin single sex bedroom and en-suite bathroom.
Accommodation is basic but clean and comfortable with electricity and running water - though these can be unreliable in Pokhara. In the dry season electricity can drop to just 8 hours a day and hot water is solar powered and limited!
