The Deaf Schools Project
In January 2012, SL Volunteers began volunteering at a Deaf School. This School provides a supportive educational environment for deaf children and their families. Volunteers run interactive activities for students of all ages. The school have asked SL Volunteers specifically to support and help the older children as they prepare to leave the school and attempt to secure work. This project is suited for people who are deaf themselves, for those who can sign and/or for people that have experience working with deaf people.
Training & Support
The project is run by Sophie Allen, a British Sign Language interpreter, who has been volunteering at Deaf schools in Sri Lanka since 2001 and is fluent in Sri Lankan sign language. Sophie has a great love for Sri Lanka and dedicates her time to ensuring that the team are adequately trained before they arrive.
The BBC 2 programme “See Hear” followed the footsteps of SL Volunteer Aliya, who was the pioneer for this project. Aliya is a graduate from Goldsmiths University who came to Lucy wanting to volunteer in Sri Lanka at Deaf Schools and joined the team for 5 months. Aliya has been a great inspiration and now many other deaf people have followed in her footsteps and joined the SL Volunteers team.
