How will I make a difference?
Volunteer with the PoD team in Nepal and help teach disadvantaged children in and around the mountain city of Pokhara.
You can contribute by volunteering on a range of fantastic projects including:
Volunteers are based teaching English in a school but can also spend afternoons at the Street Children’s centre helping the children with their homework or fun activities. Volunteers can also teach English in a women’s refuge once a week and provide informal English lessons to the girls to help build up their confidence. Volunteers can get involved with teaching other lessons at the schools such as sports, computer science, music and art.
What will I be doing?
Volunteers usually work five days per week (Monday to Friday) for around four to six hours per day.
Our school placements require volunteers to prepare and teach classes with minimal support or guidance from the school so we encourage qualified teachers to volunteer. However, with the correct pre-departure preparations, such as an online TEFL course, volunteers with no previous experience can be just as valuable.
PoD Nepal works with several schools in and around the city of Pokhara. Volunteers can choose where they would prefer to be based and can combine several placements.
Volunteers receive a Nepali language lesson in their first week in Nepal. There will usually be between 2 and 5 volunteers in Pokhara at the same time as you, though there may be less or several more.
More about the project
We have been working in Nepal since 2007 and we support them through volunteers as well as financial support through the PoD Charity.
We have two members of staff who are based in Pokhara. Chrissy is our volunteer manager; she is the first point of call for volunteers and she will be there to support you throughout your time at the project. Phil is our local Nepali placement manager and he will introduce you to your placement. The PoD team support your work through regular team meetings and by being available for informal one to one support when needed.
The schools we work with are all government funded and have limited resources.
The women’s refuge works with local women and girls who have been mistreated, exploited or abused. They provide academic education, vocational training, education on women’s rights and safety, support counselling and therapeutic services for abused women and a service aimed at helping women out of the sex trade. The Street Children's Centre rescues children from a life on the street. The centre provides safe accommodation and basic food for the children; it works with other orphanages and small organisations in the area to seek educational sponsorship for the children.
Location and free time
The volunteer guesthouse is in the Lakeside area of Pokhara which is in close proximity to restaurants, internet cafes and shops. This project location is ideal for those wanting to relax and admire the surrounding mountains or explore the local area at weekends. Pokhara is the base for many adventure activities including paragliding, white-water rafting, kayaking and trekking.
Volunteer accommodation
Volunteers live in a family run guesthouse owned by a lovely lady called Bindu which is located in Lakeside, the part of Pokhara where most travellers stay. Volunteers will have their own bedroom and en-suite bathroom.
You'll get to know Bindu and her family and they are always around to help you out. Accommodation is basic but clean and comfortable with electricity and running water - though these can be unreliable in Nepal!
