How will I make a difference?
By volunteering to teach English in this rural area of Thailand you are helping communities that don't usually get exposure to native English speakers and are in great need of assistance, with many children from low income farming families. Throughout Thailand English is the main language in tourism and in this area tourism is a major source of jobs and income so it's especially valued.
The children here rarely have the chance to meet foreigners so a native English speaker is incredibly valuable, helping them to develop their listening and speaking skills and building their confidence to use English. This volunteer placement will allow you to become fully immersed in the local community and Thai culture.
What will I be doing?
A normal week will involve around 8-10 hours of English lessons from Monday to Thursday. The school day starts at 8.30am and finishes at 3.30pm. During time when you are not teaching, you can plan and prepare for your lessons, relax and get to know the children during break times. You may teach on your own or in a pair with another volunteer.
Your role is to focus on improving speaking and listening skills and building the children's confidence to communicate with foreigners. Volunteers design lessons which are lots of fun and include interaction, including games, art, songs (the Thais love karaoke!) and any other creative activities. Teaching in Thailand is an unforgettable experience and the Thais love to have fun. There are generally between 2-6 volunteers.
More about the project
We work with several schools and volunteers will be matched to specific school depending on their skills and experience and the current needs of the projects while they are in Thailand. All the schools are Thai government schools and schools range in size from 100-300 students. Volunteers teach English to students aged from 6-15 years old. This project location is ideal for those who would like to teach English while experiencing real Thai culture off the tourist track.
Location and free time
Suratthani province is in the south east of Thailand, the nearest mainland area to the popular islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. Suratthani is the largest province of Southern Thailand and its main exports are coconuts, rubber and rambutans (a red, hairy delicious fruit which you will try!).
You will be based in the Donsak area which is about 45 minutes by car from the main town of Suratthani. It’s a rural farming area and despite its proximity to famous tourist destinations it doesn’t get visited by many tourists so it's an opportunity to get off the beaten track and discover 'real' Thailand. Facilities in Donsak are limited, with a few shops and traditional local market but Suratthani itself is a big town with a large shopping mall, cinemas, internet cafes and restaurants. Suratthani also has a very famous food night market so is a great place to visit to taste many different Thai dishes.
You will teach from Monday-Thursday leaving you long weekends free to explore the local area including the amazing islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Donsak is by the coast and houses the ferry port for the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, so you are ideally positioned to jump on one of the frequent boat services and head off to the beach! The islands are very popular destinations with travellers and as well as stunning beaches, there is great snorkelling and diving, and a lively social scene. It's also easy to take buses from Donsak to the other parts of Thailand such as Khaosok national park, Krabi and Phuket.
Volunteer accommodation
Volunteers share a single-sex simple Thai style bungalow. The bungalow is set in a area which has a traditional Thai restaurant and 80 acres of beautiful exotic gardens to explore including a lake and orchid gardens. There is also a fresh water stream where you can swim. During your volunteer placement you will have the opportunity to live with a Thai family in a homestay for 2 nights.
What's included and where your money goes
Child Protection
All volunteers are required to have a criminal records check, which we will arrange with you.
