How will I make a difference?
The PoD Summer English Camp is an exciting way to help and encourage Thai children to learn and practise English. At the camps volunteers teach English in a fun and interactive way through games, sports, songs, art and other creative activities.
A native English teacher is really valuable; volunteers help to build children’s confidence and improve their speaking and listening skills. English is the main language used in the tourist industry in Asia and is especially valued in Thailand as tourism is a major source of employment.
What will I be doing?
This is a structured 2 week volunteer project. Working with a team of other volunteers and PoD staff, your role will be to help run camps at 3 schools in rural Thailand. The camps are held in the Surat Thani province in South East Thailand near the town of Don Sak which is off the traditional tourist route. The schools love having volunteers run the PoD Summer English Camp since the local schools and communities rarely have the opportunity to meet native English speakers.
The Summer English Camp team will prepare and plan the activites while based in the city of Surat Thani in a hotel for the first 3 nights. The team will then stay in a tropical hotel and with a homestay family during the camps. Volunteers will spend a weekend on the tropical island of Koh Samui for a relaxing beach break between two of the camps. At the homestay volunteers stay with a local Thai family which is a unique and fun opportunity to see how rural Thai people live.
Teaching English in Thailand is an unforgettable experience as it allows you to improve the children's English skills while becoming fully immersed in the local community and experiencing an area of Thailand that few tourists get to see.
There are usually between 8-15 volunteers on this project.
More about the project
The PoD Summer English Camp programme has become very well established in the Don Sak region of Thailand and is in high demand from the schools. Each year the camps benefit over 250 children, having a big impact in a short period of time.
We work with several schools in the Surat Thani province which are Thai government primary and secondary schools. The English Summer Camp focuses on improving the English skills of the children aged between 8 and 13 years old.
Location and free time
The team will be based near the town of Don Sak and will explore the local attractions, such as a local waterfall, temples and beaches. Thais are very keen to share their traditions through school displays and during homestays. Volunteers will be able to taste many local cuisines at the schools and at the homestay.
The camps are based in a beautiful rural farming area which recieves few tourists, so volunteers experience traditional Thai culture. The area is green and tropical with many farms for coconut, rubber and rambutans (a hairy red fruit which you will try!) and is close to the coast which has ferries to popular holiday islands. It is a very interesting contrast to the popular tourist destination of Koh Samui; an island where volunteers will spend a relaxing weekend.
As this is a structured 2 week project free time is mainly in the evenings.
Volunteer accommodation
Volunteers will share single sex rooms throughout the volunteer project.
