How will I make a difference?
Volunteers are needed to help at orphanage and community projects in a small rural town in Cambodia, where you have the opportunity to enrich the lives of children who have had a very difficult start.
Education and particularly English skills can mean the difference between a life of absolute poverty and a life of opportunity and freedom, especially for the girls. Volunteers play a big part in supporting the projects aims by providing additional classes and English tuition, increasing cultural awareness for the orphans at the home and by financially supporting the orphanage.
The village schools initiative is providing education to a population that had previously been overlooked. The location of the villages makes it hard for many of the children to attend the local school and so, by visiting these villages’ volunteers are offering valuable skills to both the local teachers, children and community as a whole.
Part of the fee you pay goes to the orphanage you will work with and this is an essential source of funding to keep the orphanage and village schools running.
What will I be doing?
Volunteer roles and life in general at the orphanage are fairly unstructured, and there is always a lot going on to get involved with. Each day will differ and volunteers can choose to volunteer at a combination of placements, the orphanage, village schools or other community initiatives. Tasks include:
More about the project
Established in 2007, the project’s goal is to give children a 'new future' through a formal education, building up their self-confidence, teaching them English, encouraging them to go college or training them with a vocational skill, whilst at the same time enjoying life to the full.
The orphanage we work with in Cambodia currently cares for around 50 children, aged between 8 and 21 years. Many of these children come from very difficult backgrounds and the orphanage provides an alternative for the children, where they can grow up in a safe, supportive and happy environment. The children come from a variety of backgrounds; some are ‘economical orphans’ and their parents can’t afford to care for them and so the orphanage offers an alternative to life on the streets, others have come from abusive homes or are orphans and have lost one or both of their parents.
In addition to the orphanage the project also operates and administers a number of village schools around Takeo Province, the agricultural region is very poor and in the rainy season it can be difficult to access. Classes are scheduled for a time which is suitable for the children to attend - often at lunchtime, when there is a break in the agricultural work.
No government funding is available so the orphanage is reliant on its own income generating projects and support from donors and volunteers.
Location and free time
The volunteer work pattern is very flexible and it is understood that you will want to have time off to relax and to visit some of the sights of Cambodia. Most volunteers work 5 days and take 2 days off per week. In your free time you can explore the local town and countryside the beautiful lakeside and market. Phnom Penh is less than 2 hours away and so is easy to visit in your time off.
Volunteer accommodation
Accommodation is provided at the Volunteer Centre which is located a short cycle from the orphanage and village schools. The bedrooms sleep up to two people, and most are equipped with en-suite bathroom and shower facilities. There are basic but comfortable social areas to relax and internet access is provided.
