How will I make a difference?
Volunteers are needed to help at a HIV Outreach Centre which offers support and assistance to the community of Kampot. Running in collaboration with the local social services they support 20+ children and their families with counselling and healthcare support as well as nutritional meals, games and activities sessions.
In addition to this, volunteers are needed to provide basic English sessions at a local school. Education is a tool that can be used to break the poverty cycle and for many of the children at the orphanage, the ability to speak English will increase ability and confidence in school and potentially improve their employment prospects.
Cambodia has one for the highest number of HIV per head in Asia with many new infections occurring from mother to child. As in many societies HIV+ children face discrimination, fall behind in their education due to their poor health and many are denied their basic rights and receive inadequate healthcare and support.
By volunteering at the HIV Community Centre and at a local primary school you will have the opportunity to support the well-being and education of children from very low income communities.
What will I be doing?
Your time as a volunteer would be shared between the HIV Outreach Centre and a local primary school. The structure of a typical day can vary on the needs of the placements however generally a typical day would involve:
Morning at the HIV Outreach Centre
Volunteers care for younger children and lead a 1 hour activity session. This could be a sports session, colouring, crafts, homework help or something else of your choice – the more imaginative the better!
Afternoons at a local Primary School
After eating lunch with children at the Outreach Centre you can then cycle to school to run the two afternoon English sessions. Volunteers can teach in pairs and can be creative with lessons or games.
Teaching experience is not a requirement, we simply ask that volunteers are enthusiastic and imaginative and willing to learn as you teach. Lessons are led by volunteers but the project keeps a log of past lessons so that on arrival you can see what stage the children are at and what is expected of them in the next few weeks.
There are usually 2-4 volunteers at any one time however this number may vary.
More about the project
In 2013 the centre catered for 20 HIV+ children daily and this is expected increase in the coming years as many more affected children and their families visit to make use of the facilities. The centre currently provides the following:
The centre employs a full time "house mother" along with local staff to support the children and their families throughout the year.
Boung Ta Pream Primary School is just a 30 minutes cycle from the HIV Centre and has been identified by local Social Services and the Ministry of Education as a school in need of support. With no available resources or funding this state school receives approximately 200 pupils. The children are eager to learn and volunteers supplement their Khmer State Education with English sessions. English is a valuable skill in Cambodia and building their confidence to learn English at this age increases confidence levels and means that they will be more equipped for English classes when they reach secondary level education.
Location and free time
Volunteers work five days per week from Monday-Friday. Kampot town has a variety of restaurants, shops and cafes. Volunteers can arrange trips from here such as river cruises, beach trips to the coastal town of Kep or Bokor National Park.
Volunteer accommodation
Volunteers live in basic shared accommodation within the HIV Community Centre itself. The rooms are shared between 2-3 volunteers with a maximum of four volunteers at one time. Bedding is provided and rooms have mosquito nets and fans. There is a TV and internet access in the accommodation. There are shared bathrooms with hot water.
