Ghana Filming and Photography Volunteering
Location: Rural village in Eastern Ghana
Start dates: 2013 - Start dates throughout the year (see below for dates)
Duration: 2 / 4 / 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 weeks
Cost From: £895
How will I make a difference?
You will be asked to help capture images of the local people, the village and local lifestyle in rural Ghana. Volunteers capture up to date photographs and films that are needed for promotional purposes including the charity website, school sponsorship and fundraising. They are used to publicise the African charity as well as providing a means of feedback for current donors so they can see the project developments, helping form an important link between supporters and the community.
The charity creates locally produced films to educate the community on health and social issues, so volunteers work with the local team to help with scriptwriting, casting, producing and editing short educational films. The team then tours schools in the local area to use the films to educate children, teachers and the community. The films may even be shown on a large screen using a generator, a big local event!
Filming and photography volunteering in Ghana: What will I be doing?
Volunteers normally work for 5 to 6 days a week. Volunteers are needed to work with a small charity to develop the charity's photograph and film portfolio as well as creating locally produced films to help educate the local community.
It's a relaxed team volunteering environment and there is flexibility to get involved with other volunteer roles within the village too such as child care, sports coaching, building and teaching.
This is a fantastic opportunity to live in the heart of an African village and be part of the charity's life changing development work which aims to provide safe drinking water, improved education and increased sanitation to local communities. There are normally 6-12 volunteers at the project.
More about the project
The charity started their work in the community in Ghana in 2006 when they completed their first well which allowed a village of around 300 people to access safe drinking water. Since then they have expanded into helping other villages by building wells and school toilets through community partnership projects.
They actively promote health education through school and community seminars. The charity has built an information centre, health centre and library which helps to educate the community on health, hygiene, sanitation and family planning while working in partnership with local government staff. Although education is free in Ghana pupils are required to have shoes and a uniform in order to attend so the charity has provided over 700 school scholarships.
The charity has built a strong long term relationship with the villagers working alongside community working alongside local partners. Volunteers are welcomed into the village individually by the village Chief including a special drinking ceremony and after this you are under the protection of the Chief during your stay!
Location and free time
You will be based in a small friendly village nestled in a jungle in the Eastern Region of Ghana, with no electricity or running water. There are around 300 villagers who are very poor and are subsistence farmers.
You can explore the local area and travel on your days off or you can take a longer break mid-way (if doing 4 weeks) or at the end of your placement, giving you more time to visit the beaches and beautiful coastal regions of Cape Coast and Kakum National Park with its dramatic canopy walk. Volunteers can choose to visit a weekly colourful bead market in nearby town of Koforidua, Boti falls or umbrella rock at weekends.
Ghana is regarded as the one of the friendliest and safest African countries and in the evening it is an accepted practice to walk from campfire to campfire watching how the locals prepare food and chatting about the day’s events.
Volunteer accommodationThere are two different accommodations used for volunteers. Volunteers live in an 8 bed dormitory bunk house which is built on the school grounds or in a homestay living with a local family which can house up to 4 volunteers. The two accommodations are a short walking distance from each other. The accommodation is clean but very simple, with long drop toilets and no running water.
What's included and where your money goes
All volunteers are required to have a criminal records check, which we will arrange with you.
