There’s a myth around that volunteering overseas is just 18-21 year olds, fresh out of college or university. Well, we’re here to prove to you that this just isn’t the case. Volunteering overseas is open to anyone, of any age and in some ways, mature volunteers can make better candidates as they have more to offer than the younger generations.
Twenty years ago, travelling wasn’t as widely accepted as it is now, but that doesn’t mean that you have to miss out. You’re never too old to volunteer and why should the young ones have all the fun!
Whether you’ve reached retirement or want to take a more meaningful holiday then chilling on a beach for two weeks there are many opportunities out there for mature volunteers to do something unique. If you are retired, you will be in the fortunate position of having lots of free time and may be able to dedicate a decent length of time to a project which you may not have had the opportunity to do whilst you were working. Or, if you only have a few weeks, there are some great intensive volunteering projects you can join. You can even take your family with you. Volunteering overseas with your family is a great opportunity for your children to learn about how others around the world live.
Think about it, you have spent your whole life working, built up a wealth of invaluable life experience, knowledge and are a lot smarter then you were back in your teens – you are the ideal candidate to volunteer! Your age will actually make you more suitable as you may have had children of your own so have a lot more experience; you may already have a building background or learnt about a specific conservation topic. You are not out there trying to ‘find’ yourself like many youngsters, you already know who you are, know what your interests are and where your skills lie which means you can really do some useful volunteering.
There are volunteer projects around the world to suit everybody’s interest so dive into the world of volunteering and see what you fancy doing – working in an orphanage, conservation work, building, child care, teaching…the list goes on and on!
So get out there and volunteer! It’s a great way to see new countries, meet new people and really make a difference to the developing world.
